Every year on February 15th, Canadians celebrate National Flag of Canada Day, a moment to reflect on our shared identity and the values that unite us. The red and white maple leaf is more than just a design—it represents resilience, independence, and pride in who we are as a nation. But did you know that Canada’s flag has deep roots right here in Calgary?
The Canadian flag was designed by Colonel George F.G. Stanley, a historian and public servant who spent part of his life in Beltline, Calgary, at 1111 7th St. SW. His childhood home, a Tudor revival-style house built in 1908, still stands today. Now, it’s home to An An Vietnamese Kitchen & Bar, a BLOX business that reflects the diversity and vibrancy of our city.

As we celebrate our flag and all it represents, we also recognize the economic changes happening around us. With new trade policies and tariffs affecting Canada’s relationship with the U.S., now is the time to think about how we can support each other and strengthen our communities.
Navigating Change Together
On February 1, 2025, the U.S. imposed tariffs on Canadian imports, sparking discussions about trade, jobs, and the future of our economy. In response, Canada announced its own measures to protect local industries and workers. While the situation is evolving, it’s a reminder of the importance of supporting homegrown businesses, investing in our own economy, and standing strong as a nation.
Even more, recent discussions about Canada’s role on the global stage—like President Trump’s offhand suggestion that Canada could become the 51st U.S. state—have sparked conversation about what makes us uniquely Canadian. While we share close ties with our neighbors, our history, culture, and values set us apart. Moments like these are an opportunity to come together and celebrate what makes Canada special.
How You Can Support Canada and Calgary
Economic changes can feel distant, but the way we shop, work, and spend our money makes a real impact. Here are a few ways we can support our local economy and keep our communities strong:

Support Local Every Day: Opt for Canadian-made products and Calgary-based businesses in your daily life to sustain jobs and keep money circulating within our communities.
Shop Where You Live: With 85% of Canadians residing within a kilometer of their main street, take a walk, bike, or transit to explore the businesses that give our neighborhoods heir character.
Rethink Online Shopping: Instead of defaulting to large international retailers, check out local businesses' websites, social media pages, or online stores. Many Calgary businesses offer convenient online shopping options with local delivery or pickup.
Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose: Shop second-hand, recycle, and donate to extend the life cycle of goods. Supporting local thrift shops and non-profits not only minimizes waste but also contributes to community initiatives.
Expand Local Trade: As global markets shift, Canadian businesses have an opportunity to find new customers within our own borders. Tools like the Measuring Main Streets platform help businesses tap into local demand and strengthen their networks.
Be an Informed Consumer: Platforms like Made in CA and Shorefast's Economic Nutrition Certification Mark provide insights into where products originate and how money flows, enabling consumers to make informed purchasing decisions that support local economies.
A Celebration of Canadian Strength and Unity

As we celebrate Canada’s flag this February 15th, let’s remember what it stands for: a country that values its people, supports its communities, and embraces its own unique identity.
The Canadian flag was designed in Calgary, and today, its legacy continues in the streets of our city. In times of change, it reminds us of our resilience, creativity, and ability to support one another.
This Flag Day, let’s raise our Canadian flag proudly, support local businesses, and continue building a strong, independent future together.
